In case anyone was interested, and didn't already know. We flew from the UK to the US on 9 August and got in late last night, just before the insanity started.
Guess I need to go shopping for a bag to protect my computer when I have to check it in for UK flights...

I haven't tried checking a computer in one -- and you'd obviously want to do it buried deep in another bag -- but the things do seem pretty sturdy. The only problem when I wanted one was that they seemed to be back ordered everywhere. That might be over, now.
Or you could just give your computer to me, and not hvae to carry it back...
